Vox Pop Movie Night - Bitter Victory (1958)
Wednesday, March 10, 2010, 8:00 pm
Bitter Victory (1958) - Nicholas Ray (Rebel Without a Cause) directed and co-wrote this powerful and poetic antiwar film about a secret mission in the Libyan desert during World War II which goes horribly wrong. A meditation on the nature of heroism, cowardice, loneliness and alienation which resonates even more today with the Iraq war. Richard Burton and Curd Jurgens brilliantly portray the two antagonists, each man both hero and coward, lover and killer. "I kill the living to save the dead," says Burton at one point. If you liked the Hurt Locker, this film far surpasses it.
Who Knows?
Wednesday, March 10, 2010, 10:00 pm
Music that flows from Jerry Garcia, Woody Guthrie, Gunter Hampel, Sonny Rollins and beyond, to join up in the delta of Who Knows? The music surges and eddies, taking surprising and sometimes sudden turns that can soften the sound to a whisper or raise it to a roar. Guitarist/vocalist Richie Nagan’s songs originate from his long-time study and love of the Grateful Dead, while his many performances with George Clinton’s Parliament Funkadelic and Detroit drummer Muruga’s more free-form bands add other dimensions. Saxophonist, clarinetist and composer Mark Whitecage is a musician whose creativity, adventurous spirit and beautiful tone have led to a long career filled with fascinating people and projects. He has collaborated with just about every musician of note, including bassists Dominic Duval, Joe Fonda, Adam Lane and William Parker; pianist Michael Jefry Stevens, drummers John Betsch, Paul Motian, Ed Blackwell, Peter LeMaitre, Jay Rosen and Lou Grassi; multi-instrumentalists Anthony Braxton, Gunter Hampel and Sabir Mateen; trumpeters Dave Douglas and Roy Campbell, Jr.; trombonist Steve Swell, guitarist Dom Minasi, clarinetists Perry Robinson and Rozanne Levine; vocalists Nicki Mathis and Jeanne Lee; and choreographers Jean Erdman, Murray Louis and Nancy Allison. Along the way he has led and co-led an array of notable bands including Liquid Time, The Glass House Ensemble, No Respect, The Nu Band, the Bi-Coastal Orchestra, and Lane / Grassi / Whitecage. He has recorded over 50 discs, many of them award winners, including BushWacked – A Spoken Opera, No Respect – Duval/Rosen/Whitecage, Fractured Standards & Fairy Tales, Moon Blue Boogie, Split Personality, and Mark Whitecage & Liquid Time. More information on Mark is at his web site: www.erjn.it/mus/whitecage.htm Clarinetist Perry Robinson is a master of the clarinet in jazz, folk and avant-garde music. He has worked with some of the world’s best musicians, including the Brubeck Family, Gunter Hampel, Henry Grimes, Bill Dixon, Carla Bley, Archie Shepp, Charlie Haden, Badal Roy, John Carter, Anthony Braxton, Mark Whitecage, Pete Seeger and George Clinton. He has been a mainstay of Burton Greene’s Klezmokum and of Lou Grassi’s Po Band. The Perry Robinson Quartet, featuring pianist Christoph Adams, bassist Ed Schuller and drummer Ernst Bier, has released four CDs and has toured in Europe. Recently Perry has been playing with Wynne Paris and Groovananda, the pianist Nobu Stowe, the Israeli clarinetist Harold Rubin, the Israeli composer-pianist Anat Fort, and clarinetist Rozanne Levine. A Thousand Years at Sea
Thursday, March 11, 2010, 7:00 pm
A Thousand Years at Sea is the fusion of singer-songwriters Colin Cotter and Ethan Lewis, and pianist Neil Pearlman's distinctive and innovative musical sounds, bringing together elements of folk, jazz, celtic, and rock into a dynamic and stirring musical experience. Colin Cotter has shown himself to be a prolific composer and lyricist, writing eight of the songs on ATYAS's debut album, Silver Shores Await. His soulful singing is complimented by a fiddle and guitar which have developed strongly in his years of jamming and performing. Ethan Lewis brings a lot of talent and experience to the table - a rich, organic singing style, tremendous compositional and lyrical depth and sincerity, and (at only 26 years old) over two decades of fiddle-playing epicness. Neil Pearlman has performed across the country with many of the best contemporary and traditional musicians of today. His innovative, genre-defying style combines a family background in Scottish traditional music with a depth of experience in jazz and contemporary music.

Writing with acute ears for catchy hooks and pop sensibility, these four friends have been able to disguise some serious pop melody under some old-fashioned rock n' roll and passion to create a whole new sound they personally like to call 'Party Rock.'
